Prudential launch Japan small cap fund

The investment objective of the Prudential Japan Smaller Companies Fund is to maximize long-term capital growth by investing in a portfolio of smaller Japanese companies with some investment in medium and large capitalized companies in order to enhance its liquidity.

Why Japan?

Why small caps?

Small caps may benefit in particular from the current upturn of the Japanese markets as:

  • Small caps have been outperforming for months
  • Small caps are "inefficient"
  • Valuations are much more attractive
  • Better risk/return ratio

Why this fund?

This is a specialist fund in the smaller companies sector, managed in Tokyo by a highly experienced manager, Kenichi Ura, who has 17 years industry experience.

The fund invests mainly in good quality smaller Japanese companies, coveing most aspects of the Japanese economy, which show the following qualities:

  • Innovative products gaining traction
  • Generating cash flow
  • Good management
Some investment is in mid- and large caps to enhance liquidity. The current market capitalization split of the fund (as at 30 July 2004) is mid capitalization 22.5% and small Capitalization 77.5%.

Minimum investment is S$1,000, expense ratio is capped at 2% p.a. and it's available under CPFIS-OA and SRS. The underlying fund size is S$115 million*.
