Russia to Inspect Vietnamese Seafood

HANOI, July 5 Asia Pulse - The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Physio-sanitary Surveillance (VPSS) will send a delegation to Vietnam from July 7 to inspect fishing ports, fish markets, aquaculture farms; seafood processing workshops and plants in Vietnam for export licensing purposes.

After an earlier VPSS inspection last April, the agency issued directives stating that only enterprises having obtained VPSS's certificates on food safety and hygiene would be licensed to ship seafood to Russia.

Russia had put Vietnam on a banned countries list since April due to violations of its food safety standards.

Vietnamese seafood had made tremendous strides in the Russian market with phenomenal growth rates being recorded over the past two years in particular but with the stricter guidelines now being put into place the country's processors fear that exports to Russia may drop off dramatically.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) recommended seafood-processing enterprises to restructure production to increase their exports to the market. In the first five months of this year, Vietnamese enterprises exported over 21,000 tonnes of seafood to the market.
