Unionists at Kia Motors Set to Stage Partial Strike Over Pay

SEOUL, July 6 Asia Pulse - Unionized workers at Kia Motors Corp. (KSE:000270), South Korea's second-largest automaker, said Friday they were ready to stage a partial work stoppage later in the day after failing to narrow differences with management over wage demands.

The 28,000-member union was scheduled to lay down their tools for eight hours starting at 1:30 p.m., the union said in a statement posted on its website.

Kia's management and union met on Wednesday and Thursday to try to resolve the wage dispute, but the negotiations broke down when the company didn't present a counter offer to the union's demand.

The union is demanding an 8.9 per cent raise in basic salary and a special bonus equivalent to two months' salary.

In the statement, the union accused the management of not having "sincere" negotiations.
