Thailand, Vietnam Sign Agreement on Human Trafficking

HANOI, March 25 Asia Pulse - Thailand's new prime minister Samak Sundaravej met his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung on Monday and witnessed a signing of an agreement designed to stop human trafficking between the two countries.

The two leaders conferred regarding increased cooperation in trade, foreign investment, education, health and transportation, according to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA). Prime Minister Samak and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung witnessed the signing of a pact focusing on human trafficking, which international agencies say is growing not only in Southeast Asia's ASEAN states, but in other parts of the world.

Thailand's Mr Samak, during his first official Hanoi visit, also met Vietnam's President Nguyen Minh Triet and Communist party chief Nong Duc Manh before returning home Monday evening. Thailand and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1976, and mutual trade reached nearly US$5 billion in 2007. The Thai premier's visit to Vietnam is the fifth leg of his tour of Southeast Asian countries to introduce himself and to strengthen relations with the 10-member ASEAN grouping after he took office following the December 2007 general election. He visited Laos, Cambodia, Singapore and Myanmar earlier this month.

Mr Samak is to visit Indonesia on Tuesday and Wednesday, and travel to the Philippines and Brunei in early April.
