Vietnamese Fruit & Vegetable Export to Reap US$700 MLN by 2010

HCM CITY, May 6 Asia Pulse - Local experts are promoting the export of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, which are expected to garner US$700 million in turnover by 2010.

A recent programme signed between HCM City's Centre for Agriculture Consultancy and Support and the Holland-based Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries will support the export of local vegetables to the European market.

Under the programme farmers in HCM City and neighbouring provinces will be assisted in viable production.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development plans to set aside one million ha of land nationwide for cultivating vegetables and fruits through 2010.

Some 255.000ha of that amount would be used to raise vegetables for the export market.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat, said his ministry would help farmers to create new strains with high productivity and quality.

This would help enterprises improve their trademarks and update new technologies in cultivation and processing.

Phat said the country's agriculture branch had not exploited its potential because of restricted raw materials and poor quarantine inspection.

Vietnam's fruits and vegetables are exported to 50 countries and territories in the globe.

This year the country expects to earn US$350 million from exporting fruits and vegetables, an increase of 17 per cent against last year.

China will be the main market, with 60 per cent of total export volume. In the first quarter of this year, China imported US$600,000 worth of vegetables from Vietnam.

The European market, which annually consumes 75 million tones of fruit and 62 million tones of vegetables, also intends to buy more products from Vietnam.
