Taiwan Customs Officials Seize 1,000 Counterfeit Brake Pads

KEELUNG, May 7 Asia Pulse - The Keelung Customs Office in northeastern Taiwan announced Tuesday that its officials had seized nearly 1,000 counterfeit brake discs bearing the marques of Volkswagen, Audi and Honda.

A spokesman for the office said a mobile patrol unit found earlier this week that the customs clearance form for a container imported from China claimed that the goods in the container were automobile parts but gave no details about their brand names.

Customs officials examined the contents of the container and found 768 brake discs bearing the Volkswagen name, 117 brake discs bearing the trademark of Audi, and 30 discs with the Honda name. The goods carried an estimated value of NT$3.6 million (US$118,235).

Local representatives of the trademarks who examined the brake discs certified that they are all counterfeit goods.

The spokesman said that in addition to being referred to the Bureau of Foreign Trade for violating the Trademark Law, the owner of the trade company that imported the counterfeits will face prosecution on charges of violating the Customs Anti-smuggling Act.
