Vietnam's Hai Phong Pioneers New AgricultureHAI PHONG, May 7 Asia Pulse - The urbanisation of Hai Phong has forced the city's administrators and citizens to find new ways of continuing agriculture. The harmonisation of industrialisation and urbanisation with farming was pioneered in the city's outer districts of Thuy Nguyen, An Duong and Kien Thuy.
New technology has enabled farmers to provide clean high-quality produce. An Duong recorded the highest economic growth of the three districts last year and leads in the change to cultivation and breeding, says its agricultural department director Nguyen Van Hai. Its specialist crops include peach blossom in Le Loi Ward, flower in Dang Cuong Ward and vegetables in Dai Ban, Hong Phong, Le Thien, Dang Cuong and An Hoa Wards. The produce has built a reputation for quality, says the director. The districts livestock breeding follows the concentrated farming model with almost 2,000 large-scale and household farms. Development of the new models has made An Duong District a major supplier of agricultural produce, including pond-raised fish, to Hai Phong and its neighbouring provinces. An Duong resident Nguyen Hai Phuong switched his household low-yield rice fields to peach blossom trees and a fish pond five years ago. The change has taken his family from being one of the poorest in the locality to one of the most prosperous with a yearly income of more than 100 million VND (US$6,250). "We have earned an average of 150-200 million VND (US$9,350-12,500) each year for the past three years from our pond", a farmer says. (VNA)
