Pakistan's PM Approves Import of 250,000 Tonnes of Wheat

ISLAMABAD, May 8 Asia Pulse - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Tuesday approved immediate import of 250,000 tonnes wheat in the wake of a downward trend in its international price.

Chairing Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting, he directed constituting a committee to take steps for launching a scheme to help poor get essential food items at subsidized rates.

Gilani also directed Food & Agriculture Ministry to ensure food security and take all necessary measures to overcome food shortage all over the country.

Staggered import of 1.5 million tons wheatshould be made to meet an expected shortfall of 1.5 million tons in the country, he said.

ECC was told government set estimated 5 million wheat procurement target for year 2008-09. Of set target, 2.121 million tons has been procured as compared to 2.054 million tons in corresponding period last year.

On wheat export to Afghanistan, he directed it should be undertaken on government to government level only. Pakistan will continue to provide wheat and wheat flour to Afghanistan as per past practice. ECC approved 50,000 tons wheat export to Afghanistan to avert food crisis in that country, in addition to their annual requirement. It decided to strengthen anti-smuggling measures to check wheat smuggling.
