Malaysian PM to Announce Measures to Deal With Rising Food Prices

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 Asia Pulse - The government will Monday announce remedial measures to deal with rising rice price and to contain inflation as part of initiatives to ease the people's burden in coping with the high cost of living.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he would chair a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Inflation Monday to seek solutions to rising food prices and supply shortfalls.

"Some decisions would be made with regard to padi and rice," he told a news conference after opening The World Halal Forum.

To a question whether the government would impose higher fuel charges on foreigners, Abdullah, who is also Finance Minister, said the government was looking at all angles in tandem with spiralling global oil prices.

"We will make an appropriate announcement. I'm not going to tell you bit by bit. We are looking at all these (and) we are aware global oil price has gone up to US$120 per barrel," he added.
