Taiwan Customs to Step up Inspection of Diplomatic Pouch Containers

TAIPEI, May 13 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's top customs official said at the Legislative Yuan Monday that the government will step up control and inspection of diplomatic pouch containers used by foreign envoys in Taiwan.

Director General of Customs Chien Liang-chi said the Directorate General of Customs and all customs offices nationwide will strengthen inspection of diplomatic pouches and containers to prevent these containers from being used for smuggling.

Chien made the remarks in response to Kuomintang legislators' inquiries regarding media reports that Chinese-Singaporean Wu Shih-Tsai, who was detained by Taiwan law enforcement earlier this month over his suspected role as a middleman in a checkbook diplomacy scandal, may also have been involved in smuggling via diplomatic pouch containers.

The legislators quoted the media reports as saying that Wu had been restricted from leaving Taiwan as prosecutors from the northern city of Keelung suspected that he had smuggled peanuts, dried mushrooms and cigarettes into Taiwan from overseas via diplomatic pouch containers, on at least two occasions.

Wu reportedly had close connections with some ranking officials of the outgoing Democratic Progressive Party administration and called himself an "economic counselor" in Taiwan for Haiti.

Chien noted that according to the laws governing customs and relevant affairs, members of the foreign diplomatic corps in Taiwan are free from taxation, and any goods they bring into Taiwan are tax free. Those goods, however, can be inspected if the customs authorities think it is necessary, he added.
