Malaysia Sets up Police Battalion to Ensure Security at KL AirportKUALA LUMPUR, May 15 Asia Pulse - The Royal Malaysia Police has set up a special battalion to ensure security at the KL International Airport (KLIA) from Thursday, Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan said Wednesday. He said the 141 General Operations Force (GOF) personnel headed by DSP Hapka Mohd Said would begin their duty at 7 am Thursday.
Musa explained that the special battalion was formed to provide round-the-clock security to prevent security breaches, undesirable acts and criminal activities at the KLIA, to ensure that the nation's image was untarnished. "Physical security at the KLIA depends on holistic security control such as physical protective measures (barriers, lighting and electronic security), procedural security measures and terrorism counterraction measures and value-added human intervention. "The decision to station the special force at the KLIA was made following discussions with various government agencies and I hope the people will not be intimidated by its presence but will extend their cooperation," he said. On April 9, four armed men shot and injured five people, among them a policeman and a money-changer, during a S$1.5 million (US$1.1 million) robbery at the airport. (BERNAMA-OANA)
