Taiwanese Fruit Popular at South Korea Food Fair

SEOUL, May 16 Asia Pulse - Taiwanese mangoes won a thumbs up from many South Korean food business operators at the opening of the 2008 International Food Fair in Seoul, South Korea Wednesday in a sampling activity hosted by Pingtung Magistrate Tsao Chi-hung at the show's Taiwan Pavilion.

Tsao introduced juicy Irwin mangoes produced in his southern Taiwan county, as well as other agricultural products from Pingtung such as bananas, pineapples, coffee beans and cacao, attracting many visitors from South Korea and other countries.

The Pingtung County delegation led by Tsao is among 22 groups from Taiwan attending the five-day fair that will run through May 18 and is regarded as one of the most important annual foodstuff shows in Asia. This year, over 700 businesses from 30 countries including the United States, Japan, Australia and China are participating in the fair.

Citing Ministry of Finance statistics, officials of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) , which organized the Taiwan Pavilion, said Taiwan exported food products worth over US$114 million to South Korea in 2007, representing a rise of 8.64 percent compared with the level of the previous year.

The figure makes South Korea the seventh-largest market for Taiwanese agricultural products, the officials said.
