S Korea's Jeju Air to Fly Overseas in July

SEOUL, May 16 Asia Pulse - Jeju Air Co., South Korea's biggest budget carrier, plans to begin offering international flights between the city of Jeju and Hiroshima, Japan, in July, the carrier's president said Friday.

"We will launch charter flight services on the route on July 11," said Ko Young-sup.

The carrier also plans to operate charter flights between Incheon and Kitakyushu a week after its launch of the Jeju-Hiroshima charter flights, he added.

Jeju Air has decided to start overseas service with charter flights, not regular ones, as it is a newcomer in terms of operating international routes, Ko said.

The budget carrier will use a Boeing 737-800 aircraft for the charter flights, he added.

The carrier is slated to meet the requirements to offer regular overseas air services in July.

Last November, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation introduced a rule requiring discount carriers to operate over 20,000 domestic flights without accidents for at least two years before launching overseas services.

The low-fare carrier, which was launched in 2006, operates five turboprop planes for domestic flights.
