Bangladesh to Import 100,000 Tonnes of Wheat

DHAKA, May 16 Asia Pulse - The government will import 100,000 metric tonnes of wheat to ease the demand for the food item, the price of which has more than doubled in recent times.

To this effect, the Advisors Committee on Public Procurement Thursday approved a proposal at a meeting presided over by Finance Advisor Mirza Azizul Islam.

According to the proposal, placed by the Food Ministry, 70,000 mt wheat will be imported through Chittagong Port while the rest through Mongla seaport.

Price for per-MT wheat to be imported through Chittagong port was fixed at US$ 446 while 456 per-MT to be imported through Mongla port.

A Chittagong-based local firm will supply the wheat through its Singapore-based principal firm.

The committee also approved another proposal placed by the Communications Ministry for appointing a consultant for its Dhaka-Chittagong Highway 4-lane-conversion project.
