LG Electronics Q2 profits soar on strong handset, TV sales

South Korea's LG Electronics said on Monday its second-quarter net profit soared 84 percent year-on-year on strong sales of handsets and flat-screen TVs.

The company also reported strong gains from its investment in LG Display, a joint venture with Dutch firm Philips which makes flat panel screens.

The country's second-largest electronics maker by revenue after Samsung Electronics reported net profit of 706.9 billion won (696 million dollars) from April-June compared with 384.6 billion a year earlier.

Sales rose 22.5 percent year-on-year to 7.23 trillion won, while the company reported an operating profit of 634.8 billion won -- more than triple that of a year earlier.

LG Electronics produces items ranging from mobile handsets and flat panels to air conditioners and other home appliances.
